Government and Civic Senior Architect

Role description:
Arcadis is seeking a Senior Architect with experience focused on working in the government and civic practice areas, and extensive project delivery experience, to join its Government & Civic Practice Group in the Ottawa office. This position is focused on developing, running and overseeing projects from conceptual design to construction completion. Role includes opportunities to lead and participate in business development activities, providing technical expertise during project execution, mentoring junior and intermediate staff, and developing and fostering an innovative and collaborative design teams within the Ottawa practice. The candidate should be well established in the Government and Civic space in Ottawa.
Role accountabilities:
- Responsible for leading all phases of projects, with a high level of proficiency and expertise, while adhering to client requirements and project goals, while maintaining high standards of excellence in design and project management efficiency.
- Leads and participates in marketing opportunities and develops successful client relationships for continuing business, including responding to requests for proposal and developing schedules, budgets and project plans for responses.
- Understands federal design specifications, in particular GC Workplace requirements.
- Full responsibility for managing all aspects of projects with a focus on efficient execution within scope and budget.
- Manages and leads design teams, demonstrating strong and effective communication, to inspire design ideas and successfully deliver projects in a collaborative and innovative studio environment.
- Works with the design team, client and senior management to advise on project status, budget constraints and forecasting, and design progress to provide reporting for project status and business development.
- Provides on-going communication through team meetings, minutes, and memos to the project team, consultants, stakeholders and client. Utilizing strong writing skills to provide concise, clear and accurate written communications.
- Monitors construction administration during the construction phase and provides technical and design input to assist with contract administration instructions and decision making. Responsible for full execution of a project from early design concepts to construction close-out and handover.
- Coordinates staffing resources with the studio leads and practice group managers.
- Takes a leading role in mentoring and developing staff through projects, and fosters design innovation and collaboration within project teams.
- Reviews work for accuracy, omissions, legibility, and for document compliance in accordance with the project documents and contract.
- Travels as needed for client meetings, conferences, and internal strategic meetings, both locally within Eastern Ontario/Ottawa region, as well as further depending on project and client locations.
Qualifications & Experience:
- OAA Licensed Architect, or ability to license in the Province of Ontario within 6 months of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Architecture
- Professional accreditation in one or more of the following sustainability programs is preferred:
- Passive House CPHC or CPHD,
- LEED AP, BREEAM AP,
- and/or WELL AP
- 12+ years of experience.
- Experience in the government and civic sectors, particularly working with PSPC and governmental departments and agencies.
- Conducting project kick-off meetings, and demonstrating high levels of proficiency in both verbal and written communication.
- Site analysis and concept development.
- Schematic and detailed design development, including materials and building systems selections.
- Contract document production.
- Specifications development.
- Construction contract administration experience.
- Experience with developing RFP responses, including scheduling, budgeting and project planning.
